This Saturday, July 20th, instead of the usual poetry classes on the third Saturday of every month at Busboys & Poets Takoma, Poet Life Academy is taking 30 students to the National Museum of African American History and Culture. This experience is essential to our young poets because it gives them the opportunity to experience historical art that has and still makes a positive impact and influence on our society.
Christoph Jenkins started field trips for The Poet Life Academy when one of our schools asked if it was possible to incorporate a field trip into the summer camp curriculum. We used this as an opportunity to take our students to Busboys & Poets where they were able to stand on stage and recite their poetry. The Poet Life Academy engages in two field trips per year: one in January and the other in July. Our first field trip was to the Kennedy Center and we believe field trips are essential in order to expose students to things they would not otherwise experience. Now, we use field trips to expand the opportunities, minds, and experiences of our students.
